    Does plaquenil help psoriatic arthritis

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its recommendations for people who are at higher risk for complications from COVID-19 -- including people over 60 and those with severe chronic medical conditions -- to "stay at home as much as possible" and "avoid crowds." According to the CDC website, "Older adults and people who have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease seem to be at higher risk for more serious COVID-19 illness. We asked Michael George, MD, a rheumatologist and epidemiologist who studies infections in patients with autoimmune disease, who should follow this new guidance. “The more at risk you are, the more you should consider this recommendation.” He says this new guidance particularly applies to those with more severe disease or who have been hospitalized in the past with a respiratory infection or have interstitial lung disease, COPD or asthma, for example.

Plaquenil is sometimes prescribed to treat inflammation in people with psoriatic arthritis. Plaquenil is also known by its drug name, Hydroxychloroquine. Plaquenil should be used with caution in people with skin symptoms of psoriasis since it can cause a severe flare-up. The known side effects include injury to the retina of the eye, and regular 3 or 6 monthly ophthalmologist examinations are suggested while using Plaquenil. Read more on the web page called the side effects for plaquenil. There are natural options for psoriatic arthritis which are effective and 100% side-effect free. They're painkillers that ease joint pain and swelling from psoriatic arthritis. But they also can trigger psoriasis flare-ups. Aralen and hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil can cause problems.

(See below for more details on risk factors.) People with osteoarthritis, or non-autoimmune types of arthritis, who have risk factors, such as age (over 60 years) or severe underlying medical condition should follow the CDC guidance on crowd avoidance, too. George adds, “everyone should follow the general precautions,” such as handwashing, not touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth. Those with more mild disease may want to ask their doctor for guidance.

Now I take 2.5 mg daily and 200 mg Plaquenil daily. Flares happen a few times a year at which time I take a second dose of each medication. I have not found any posts about people on these medications for psoriatic arthritis. They have served me well. I should add that I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia years prior to the psoriatic arthritis. The two most commonly used antimalarials in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis are Plaquenil ® hydroxychloroquine and Aralen ® chloroquine phosphate. Aralen has not been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration FDA to treat conditions other than malaria. I, too, have PSA and the spondylitis type. I am currently on Plaquenil for the PSA as it works for my fingers and have been on Sulfasalazine for three weeks and am up to the 2 pills twice a day for the last few days for my SI joint. I work full time and try to get up and walk around or do something physical at least every two hours or I lock up and its ridiculous.
